Dental health plays an important role in your pet’s overall well-being, and dental disease can contribute to other health problems if left untreated.
Your pet’s teeth and gums should be checked by a veterinarian at least once a year. Regular tooth brushing at home with pet-safe toothpaste helps prevent plaque and tartar buildup between veterinary visits.
Tips for Brushing Your Pet’s Teeth:
Use pet-safe toothpaste only
Start slowly and keep sessions short and positive
Brush gently along the gumline
Aim for daily brushing, or as often as your pet will tolerate
Schedule a veterinary visit if you notice bad breath, broken or discolored teeth, tartar buildup, drooling, difficulty chewing, reduced appetite, pain, bleeding, swelling around the mouth, or behavior changes such as irritability. Use caution when checking your pet’s mouth, as dental pain can make pets more likely to bite.
